MS Security Essentials does not patch vulnerabilities found
in Windows itself. Even MSE is on life support. It's no
longer available for Windows XP and virus definitions will
no longer be updated after 2023 even for Win7.
I'm not excited about MSE entirely, but it's better than
nothing. It was a fine performer on XP until it was finally
depricated and ceased to function as expected. But a combination
of SpybotS&D, Malwarebyes and SpywareBlaster seems to be good
enough. I'll entertain a scan once in a while, and nothing has
emerged to be a concern.
As long as I don't capitulate to phishing emails, and as long as
I stick with trusted websites, there is no reason for me to be
afraid to use XP or Win7.
I would imagine that the phishing emails I get hope to catch
someone who is vulnerable to an unpatched exploit.
The fact is, that unless you are enrolled in ESU, all Win 7
machines are vulnerable. I get it, there are lots of reasons
to use old software, but there risks to doing that and it
shouldn't be minimized.
I wouldn't try to pass a Win7 pc to someone new to the pc scene.
But for myself, I think that I am OK with the Win7 and XP system
just fine.
